HowtoWriteanInstagramBioThatTurnsVisitorsIntoFollowers

How to write an Instagram bio within the 150-character limit, with a simple formula, 12 examples for different accounts (some in Roman Urdu), links, highlights and mistakes.

Your Instagram bio is the short block of text under your name, and it does more work than its size suggests. Every Reel, Collab or comment that catches someone's interest sends them to your profile. In a few seconds, they decide whether to follow, message you or leave. The bio is a big part of that decision.

A good bio answers three questions quickly: who are you, what will I get by following, and what should I do next? You only have 150 characters for it, so every word has to earn its place.

This guide gives you a simple formula, twelve real-world style examples for different types of accounts (including a few in Roman Urdu), and the profile details around the bio that make it work harder.

The basics: 150 characters and a searchable name

Instagram limits bios to 150 characters, including spaces and emojis. That is roughly two short sentences or three to four lines. Line breaks help readability, and emojis can work as bullet points, but don't let them crowd out the message.

The name field (the bold text above your bio, separate from your @username) is short, around 30 characters at the time of writing, and it is searchable. People who search "baker Lahore" or "math tutor" can find accounts with those words in the name field. So instead of only your name, add a keyword:

  • "Sana | Math Tutor"
  • "Hira Bakes | Cakes Lahore"
  • "Ali Khan | Wedding Photographer"

Instagram limits how often you can change your name, so pick carefully.

A simple bio formula

Most good bios follow a structure like this:

  1. Who you are or what you do: "Home baker", "Fitness coach for busy moms", "Freelance logo designer".
  2. What you post or offer: "Custom cakes and cupcakes", "15-minute home workouts", "Brand identities for small businesses".
  3. For whom or where: "Delivering in Islamabad", "For beginners", "Working with clients worldwide".
  4. Proof or personality (optional): a short credential or a touch of humour.
  5. Call to action: "DM to order", "Free guide below", "WhatsApp for bookings".

You don't need all five in every bio. Clarity first, personality second. If you'd like several drafts to compare, the Instagram Bio Generator writes eight versions within the character limit based on who you are and the vibe you want, in English, Roman Urdu, Urdu, Hindi or Arabic.

Make the link in bio count

Instagram lets you add links to your profile (professional accounts can add several, though the exact limit has changed over time). The link is often where followers become customers, so choose its destination carefully:

  • A business might link to a WhatsApp chat, an online store or a booking form.
  • A creator might link to a YouTube channel, a free guide or a page with several links.
  • A freelancer might link to a portfolio.

Refer to the link in your bio ("order below", "portfolio in link") so people know it is there. Test it from a phone yourself, because broken links quietly lose customers. If you use a link page with many buttons, keep it short and put the most important action first.

Highlights continue where the bio ends

Your bio can't fit prices, reviews, delivery areas and FAQs. Highlights can. Save relevant Stories into Highlights with clear names and simple covers, such as:

  • "Start Here" with a short intro to who you are
  • "Prices" or "Menu"
  • "Reviews" with customer feedback screenshots (with permission)
  • "Order" explaining payment options such as bank transfer, JazzCash or cash on delivery
  • "FAQ" answering the questions you get in DMs every day

Keep the most important Highlights first, since only a few are visible without scrolling.

Business and creator account extras

Switching to a professional account (free in the app settings) gives you extra profile features. You can display a category under your name, such as "Bakery", "Photographer" or "Digital creator", which tells visitors what you do before they even read the bio. You can also add contact options like email, phone, an address, or action buttons such as booking or ordering, depending on your region and category.

For local businesses, a visible address or service area and a call or WhatsApp button can matter more than a perfectly written bio. Choose which buttons to show based on how customers actually prefer to reach you. Feature availability varies, so check what your app offers under Edit profile.

Update your bio as you grow

A bio isn't a one-time task. Update it when:

  • You launch a new product, service or collection
  • You run a sale, giveaway or limited booking window
  • Your niche or audience shifts
  • Your old bio doesn't match what you mostly post anymore

A small trick: review your profile once a month as if you were a stranger who just watched one of your Reels. Would you understand the account and know what to do next? If not, rewrite it. You can also check Insights for profile visits and link taps before and after a change, to see if the new bio performs better.

Common bio mistakes

  • Being vague: "Living my best life ✨" tells a visitor nothing about why to follow.
  • Only quotes or song lyrics: fine for a private account, wasted space for a creator or business.
  • No call to action: people don't know whether to DM, click or just follow.
  • Too many emojis: they make the text hard to scan.
  • Hashtag lists in the bio: they rarely help and look cluttered.
  • Outdated information: old prices, expired offers or a dead link damage trust.
  • Keyword stuffing: "Cakes Lahore Cakes Bakery Best Cakes" looks spammy; one clear keyword is enough.

Your next step

Open your profile now and read your bio out loud. Then rewrite it using the formula: what you do, what people get, who it's for and one clear action. Add a keyword to your name field and tidy your Highlights. Once your profile is ready, the next job is bringing more people to it, and our guide to growing Instagram followers organically covers exactly that. FAQ

Can I write my Instagram bio in Urdu or Roman Urdu?

Yes. Write in the language your audience uses. Many Pakistani businesses mix English and Roman Urdu, and that is fine as long as it is clear. Just remember keyword searches work best with words people actually type.

Should I use emojis in my bio?

A few emojis can make your bio easier to scan, for example as line markers. Keep them relevant and don't let them replace words that explain what you do.
